What would be the purpose of getting a dog carrier/tote bag?
I was thinking of getting a dog carrier/tote bag for my 10 pound chihuahua. I have no idea why! I just know that people who have chihuahuas get these bags and the doggy sits in it and you look like a celebrity. I don't know. I guess if I were taking him out with me and I didn't want him running around or maybe a store where he can't be out and about in. I guess I would have it for that. But what are some other reasons to have it?

Safety! Not to resemble a celebrity.....
No reason at all. I can see a crate in a car for transport, but that's it. As for a store where he can't be out and about.....that's illegal unless the dog is a certified service dog.
waste of money.....go for a leash
I have chihuahuas and carry my dogs to the vet in a bag instead of on a leash. It is easier because my dogs hate leashes. My dogs are mostly at home unless they go to the vet. When I have puppies, I take them in the bags as well so they aren't exposed to any germs from the other dogs.
Most people get them for the "Look at me" factor. However, I have a misfit dog and she is not able to walk for any length of time, so when she starts having trouble walking, I put her in hers.

I don't believe that dogs should be carried around unless there is a reason for it.
I own three small dogs that are under 10 pounds and i would NEVER put them in a tote bag. Just because your dog is small does NOT mean he isn't capable of walking. He is still a DOG and would much rather WALK then be stuffed into a tote bag. Instead of putting a living creature that is perfectly capable of walking into a bag, Just buy him a new leash. There are NO good reasons to shove a dog into a bag. If your dog is not able to walk on a leash in a certain area, don't bring your dog at all.
I can't think of any reason to have one. Dogs have two more legs than I have. It makes no sense to me to carry them.
your animal is not an accessory. dont carry him around...walk your dog!
A dog carrier is useful if you take your dog to obedience/open/champion/companion show or to transport your dog in the car.

Otherwise a dog benefits from exercising using their own four legs and not being carried.
A carrier is good to be used like a small crate. So it would be good for riding in the car. Going to the vets. Dog classes. Dog shows. Travel on a plane. Used as a crate at home. Otherwise a collar & leash are better. Your dog needs to walk for exercise to stay healthy. As far as putting him in a purse to carry around or take into a store (your guy is a little big for that anyway at 10#) leave that to the celebrities! LOL
